There are many strange places in the world. But what if we tell you that there is a place where only twins are born? Such a place exist in India itself. Though India has one of the lowest twinning rates in the world yet this place has the highest rate of twinning in Asia.
Kodinhi Village is popularly known as Twins Village in the Malappuram district of Kerala. At present, there are about 400 twin pairs living here, which include from new-born to 65 years old. Globally, 4 twins are born for every 1000 babies. But in Kodinhi, 45 twins are born for every 1000 children. Although this average is second in the whole world, it comes first in Asia. Nigeria’s Igbo-Ora is number one in the world with an average of 145. Kodinhi village is a Muslim majority village with a population of about 2000. Twins can be seen here at homes, schools and markets in this village.
The village got the worldwide attention
Due to this special feature of this place, Kodinhi has become famous on the world level. Most of the big media houses of the world have covered the story here. Many scientists from abroad come here from time to time to do research. The Government of India has also appointed a researcher to study this place.
This trend started 70 years ago
The oldest of the twins living in this village is 65 years old. It is believed that twins were born in this village since then. Initially, only a few twins were born, but later it accelerated and now twins are being born at a very high rate. This can be substantiated by the fact that nearly half of the total twins were born in the last 10 years.
This cause so much trouble
Due to having so many twins in the same village, people also have to face problems. Especially in school where it becomes difficult for teachers to differentiate between children. The second biggest problem comes to newly married couples who do not even understand for a few days who their life partner is. Interestingly, if one of these twins is sick, then another one also fall sick.
No cogent study to explain this
What is the reason behind so many twins being born in this place, it is still unknown. Earlier, doctors attributed this to the dietary habits of residents here, but the food of the people of this area is similar to that of other areas of Kerala. Hence this argument was rejected. To date, there is no promising study that defines this phenomenon.
