The Dawki River in Shillong, the wonder of the Northeast, is well-known for its hypnotic beauty that surrounds the place and appears to be a nature lover’s heaven.

The Wah Umngot River flows near the village Mawlynnong, Dawki in the bottom of the Jaintia Hills and is extremely close to the border of India and Bangladesh; it is 100 kilometres from Shillong, Meghalaya.

Dawki is a little town with one of India’s cleanest rivers and sustainable tourism. Meghalaya itself is packed with natural beauty, including breathtaking waterfalls, several lakes and forests that are very impressive, pine-covered stunning hills, and an abundance of green trees.

Actually, this river became popular on social media because travellers shared photos of it. The river flows through Moylnong, Asia’s cleanest village, near the Indo-Bangladesh border, and then between the Jaintia and Khasi Hills before entering Bangladesh.

The photographs clearly show that this river is so pure that the boat can be seen floating on the water. There are also pebbles and stones discovered within the river.

The rays of the sun dropping in the river, together with the chirping of birds, are quite peaceful and create the impression of being in a natural setting. The sound of water may be heard comfortably here because of the pleasant atmosphere. From November through April is the greatest time to come.

The fact that this river has a significant quantity of fish is intriguing. In the winter, it becomes even more attractive and clean; all visitors are instructed not to spread any form of litter, and if they do, action is taken against them.

What kinds of activities are available?

Boating is the ideal way to appreciate the beauty of the Dawki River because you can see the bottom of the river when it is approximately 15-20 feet deep. Each boat may carry a maximum of four people and one fisherman. Boating on this river will make you feel as if you are floating on a sheet of transparent glass. A one-and-a-half-hour boat ride along the river would cost you approximately Rs 500 per person. Not only is the water clear, but you can also see the massive Bangladeshi border from Dawki River.
